Founding Chairman Yang Dehua Awarded Honorary Doctorate in Engineering by National Chung Hsing University
Yang Dehua, founding chairman of the Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry (TAMI), was born into a farming family in Taichung. He graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Chung Hsing University, was named an Outstanding Alumnus in the seventh cohort, and earned a master’s degree from the EMBA Leadership Program at Chung Hsing. In 1975, at the age of just 30, he founded Chengtai Machinery with an entrepreneurial spirit of innovation. Today, the group encompasses Chengtai Machinery, Awea Mechantronic, and Yih Cheon Machinery, all of which hold a significant position in the global machine tool market.
Starting from contract manufacturing of lathe parts, Yang overcame numerous challenges and eventually launched his own brand, developing tabletop lathes, high-speed lathes, and CNC lathes. Today, the company produces some of the most advanced machines on the market, including “nine-axis control, five-axis simultaneous milling-turning machining centers.” With over 800 product types, the group’s sales reach 45 countries and regions worldwide.
Beyond his business success, Yang has devoted himself to the overall development of Taiwan’s industry. Although Taiwan’s machine tool industry boasts an annual output value exceeding NT$100 billion, it long lacked a dedicated association to promote industry growth. Through Yang’s efforts, the Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry was established in 2007 with the support of fellow industry leaders, and he was elected as its founding chairman. Over the past 16 years, under the leadership of Yang and successive chairpersons, and with the united efforts of member companies, Taiwan’s machine tool industry has continued to thrive.
Yang has consistently supported industry-academia collaboration and advocated for integrating theory with practice. He served as chairman of the Central Taiwan Industry-Academia Training Association to implement talent development initiatives and actively nurtured young talent. For more than 12 years, he has organized the “Precision Machine Tool and Intelligent Technology Project Competition” in collaboration with National Chung Hsing University and Chengtai Group. He also played a key role in establishing the university’s “Intelligent Machinery Technology Research Center” and “Smart Manufacturing Talent and Technology Training Base,” fostering innovation and encouraging outstanding talent to join the machinery industry, thereby advancing Taiwan’s machine tool technology and smart manufacturing capabilities.
Despite his frugal lifestyle, Yang is passionate about philanthropy. In memory of his late father, he founded the “Yang Wen-Hsu Charity Foundation,” quietly supporting disadvantaged groups and contributing to Taiwan’s progress. His diligence, managerial expertise, and deep love for Taiwan make him a role model for faculty and students alike. In recognition of his achievements, National Chung Hsing University has conferred upon him the Honorary Doctorate in Engineering in accordance with its regulations.
Vice Chairman Chen Cheng, Executive Supervisor Lin Song-Yi, Advisors Chen Jin-Bo, Lai Yong-Xiang, and Zhan Bing-Chi, Director Lin Sheng-Zhu, and Secretary-General Chen Zhong-Ping of the association were also present to offer their congratulations.
