Monthly Machine Tool Orders (January 2026)
The total value of machine tool orders in January was 145.58 billion yen.
This decreased 8.2% compared to December 2025 and marked the first month of month-on-month decline in two months. However, this figure represented an increase of 25.3% compared to the same month of the previous year and marked the seventh consecutive month of year-on-year growth.
Although total orders fell below 150 billion yen for the first time in two months, they marked the seventh consecutive month of increase compared to the same month last year.
Machine tool orders in January were down compared to the previous month for both domestic and overseas demand but up compared to the same month last year.
Growth in overseas demand contributed to the strong performance.
As for the outlook for orders, while the global economy remains uncertain, capital investment is generally strong, and we are hopeful that demand will increase going forward.
Domestic orders fell by 18.2% from December to 32.62 billion yen.
However, this figure showed an increase of 2.0% over the same month of the previous year.
Looking at major industries, orders compared to December fell by 24.3% in industrial machinery, by 27.4% in motor vehicles, rose by 33.1% in electrical & precision machinery, and by 14.8% in aircraft, shipbuilding & transport equipment. Foreign orders fell by 4.9% from December to 112.96 billion yen, marking the first month of month-on-month decline in two months.
Nevertheless, foreign orders showed an increase of 34.2% over the same month of the previous year, and this marked the sixteenth consecutive month of year-on-year growth.
By region, orders from Asia rose by 17.7% over December to 61.85 billion yen.
This increased 38.1% over the same month of the previous year. Orders from Europe fell by 32.2% from December to 15.05 billion yen.
This was an increase of 13.9% over the same month of the previous year. Orders from North America fell by 16.6% from December, amounting to 34.55 billion yen.
This figure showed an increase of 43.0% over the same month of the previous year.
