Market Overview

According to the Japan Machine Tool Builders' Association (JMTBA), total machine tool orders in July 2026 reached ¥193.09 billion, down 5.1% from June but up 50.4% year-on-year. This marks the thirteenth consecutive month of year-on-year growth. Total orders have remained above the ¥120 billion level for seventeen consecutive months and reached the third-highest monthly level on record.

JMTBA noted that expanding investments in AI- and robotics-related industries continue to support global demand for capital equipment. While geopolitical uncertainties and inflationary concerns remain, the fundamental outlook for manufacturing investment continues to show resilience.

Domestic Market Performance

Domestic orders totaled ¥53.24 billion in July, representing a decline of 8.2% from June but an increase of 50.2% compared with the same month last year.

Industrial machinery remained the largest source of domestic demand, while the electrical and precision machinery sector delivered the strongest growth, more than doubling from a year earlier as investments in semiconductors, electronics, and advanced technologies accelerated.

Major Industry Performance

Europe

European orders increased to ¥23.13 billion, up 9.5% from June and 40.7% from a year earlier. Demand from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom continued to recover steadily.

North America

Orders from North America totaled ¥40.44 billion, down slightly by 0.5% from June but up 51.4% year-on-year. Demand in the United States remained solid, supported by equipment replacement cycles and continued investment in advanced manufacturing industries.

MA Insights

1. AI Becomes a New Growth Engine for Machine Tool Demand

For the first time, JMTBA explicitly highlighted AI- and robotics-related industries as key drivers of global machine tool investment. Demand associated with AI infrastructure, automation, and intelligent manufacturing continues to support growth across Asia and North America.

2. China Continues to Lead Overseas Demand

Orders from China reached ¥48.63 billion in July, maintaining its position as Japan's largest overseas market. The figures indicate that industrial upgrading and demand for high-end manufacturing equipment remain strong in China.

3. Taiwan Shows Strong Recovery Momentum

Taiwan recorded one of the strongest growth rates among major Asian markets, with machine tool orders surging more than 160% year-on-year. The increase reflects ongoing investment in semiconductors, electronics, and advanced manufacturing capacity.

4. Order Backlogs Remain at Elevated Levels

As of the end of July, Japan's machine tool order backlog stood at ¥1.009 trillion, an increase of 39.2% from the previous year. The substantial backlog suggests manufacturers continue to enjoy strong production visibility in the months ahead.
