Facing current challenges such as the sharp depreciation of the Japanese yen, geopolitical risks, and trade frictions, AI is emerging as the key to enhancing competitiveness and driving output growth in the manufacturing sector. On July 19, TechOrange, in collaboration with the Taiwan Machine Tool & Accessory Builders’ Association (TMBA), hosted the 2024 AI Smart Factory Forum. TMBA Chairman Chen Bojia attended as a speaker, delivering a keynote titled “Joining Forces with the Machine Tool Ecosystem to Boost Industry Competitiveness.” He provided an in-depth analysis of the industry’s current state, TMBA’s dual-axis transformation strategy, and a detailed blueprint for the development and vision of the machine tool ecosystem.

Taichung City Government’s Director of Digital Governance, Lin Gulong, also delivered remarks at the event. Lin Desheng, Chief Secretary of the Industrial Development Bureau under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, shared insights on “Leveraging AI Technology for Intelligent Machine Evolution,” highlighting the government’s commitment to digital development. The forum featured AI manufacturing experts from SAS Taiwan, Iscool Software Technology, Topkey Tech, Taiwan FanRuan, and NVIDIA, who explored innovative models for harnessing AI to maximize production efficiency and enhance market competitiveness within the Golden Valley industrial cluster.

In his opening speech, TechOrange President Tai Ji-quan addressed the theme “Manufacturing Trends Driven by AI Competition, Labor Shortages, and New Globalization.” He emphasized that as Cold War 2.0, population decline, and the AI arms race converge into three epic forces globally, “Gathering intelligence, active participation, and boldly embracing the wave of new technologies” will become essential mindsets for all professionals.

Key Strategies for Upgrading Machine Tools and the Machinery Industry with AI
“Taichung’s machine tool cluster needs a shift in its business model,” stated TMBA Chairman Chen Bojia during his keynote. For the machine tool industry, the most critical element in digital transformation is knowledge management. Only by establishing a solid foundation for knowledge management can companies create new added value and work models while introducing new technologies.

AI serves as a supporting role in knowledge management by optimizing knowledge integration, resource consolidation, and decision-making quality, while reducing logistical and informational gaps. For companies that still find digital transformation distant and unclear, TMBA will actively provide assistance to bridge information gaps, continuously build the machine tool ecosystem, and foster mutual growth and prosperity. The goal is to help more machine tool manufacturers overcome the barriers to digital transformation and strengthen technical collaboration through an ecosystem-driven approach—ultimately driving technological progress, developing high-value-added products, and expanding economic scale and market share.
