Seeing the Future Through Practice: Hualien and Taitung Students Explore Careers in Smart Machinery
nside the classrooms of National Hualien Industrial Vocational Senior High School, there was none of the heaviness often associated with traditional metalworking shops. Instead, the quiet hum of computer fans blended with the students’ animated discussions, charged with both anticipation and excitement.
Organized by the Taiwan Machine Tool & Accessory Builders’ Association (TMBA), the Smart Machinery Hands-on Experience Camp unfolded on campus with a clear focus on learning by doing. Moving beyond conventional classroom instruction, the program brought industry-grade software, hardware, and practical know-how directly into the school. Guided by experienced industry instructors, students from Hualien and Taitung stepped into the front line of smart manufacturing through hands-on practice.
Igniting Craftsmanship: From Digital Codes to Sparks of Machining
“When I entered the program and saw the machine move according to the code I had written, the sense of achievement was beyond words,” one student shared with excitement—capturing the spirit of the camp. Through a series of intensive practical sessions, each day offered a new and demanding hands-on challenge.
- Writing the language of human-machine communication: On the first day, students were introduced to CAD/CAM drawing and CNC lathe programming. Although the complex codes initially proved challenging, patient guidance from industry instructors helped the students complete their own designs and input self-written control programs into the machines—bringing digital intelligence to cold steel.
- The symphony of metal cutting: Step by step, students adjusted and operated lathes and milling machines themselves. As cutting tools shaped the metal amid coolant mist and sparks, parts that had once existed only on drawings gradually took form before their eyes. “Listening in class cannot compare with doing it ourselves,” the students said, proudly recording their finished workpieces on their phones.
- Working side by side with the future “Iron Man”: Robotic arms in the training classroom were no longer distant technologies. Students manually taught the robotic arms movement paths and wrote commands for precise picking and stacking tasks. When the arms followed their instructions accurately, the classroom erupted in cheers, becoming a small-scale showcase of technology in action.

Focus and Sincerity: Core Strengths of Students from Hualien and Taitung
The depth and breadth of the program also drew attention from leading industry companies. Lin Chien-yu, General Manager of Winson Machinery and Deputy Convenor of TMBA’s Industry-Academia Committee, made a special trip to encourage the students in person.
Lin observed that students from Hualien and Taitung possess a rare combination of focus and sincerity. In machine tools and smart manufacturing—fields where micron-level precision matters—calm concentration and attention to detail are essential qualities for becoming outstanding craftsmen and engineers. He encouraged the students to use this experience as a starting point for boldly exploring the possibilities of smart machinery.

Bridging Learning and Practice, Expanding Career Imagination
Through intensive hands-on practice, technical knowledge that once seemed abstract and difficult became concrete, engaging, and approachable. More importantly, the experience planted new aspirations for future employment and industry-academia collaboration, giving students a clearer sense of confidence as they considered entering the workforce after graduation.

Planting the Seeds for Taiwan’s Smart Manufacturing Future in Hualien and Taitung
This training camp was more than a transfer of technical skills; it was a meaningful dialogue between education and industry. It opened a window for students from Hualien and Taitung into the world of digital transformation and smart manufacturing. The seeds have now been planted in eastern Taiwan, and we look forward to seeing them grow into a strong foundation for Taiwan’s smart machinery industry in the years ahead.
