From precision motion components to an international brand, and from business leadership to industry development and education, Eric Y. T. Chuo, Founder and Group President of HIWIN Technologies, has devoted more than four decades to strengthening Taiwan’s precision machinery industry. Global Views Monthly presented him with its Lifetime Achievement Award at the 24th Global Views Leaders Forum in 2026, recognizing his longstanding contributions to technological innovation, smart manufacturing, and talent development.

The forum’s theme, “A World in Chaos: Seeking New Stability, New Growth, and New Value,” reflects the changes confronting industries worldwide. Against this backdrop, Chuo’s commitment to core technologies, brand building, and engineering talent offers valuable insights for Taiwan’s machine tool industry.

After an early career in finance, Chuo entered the machinery industry and founded HIWIN Technologies and HIWIN Mikrosystem. He focused on ball screws, linear guideways, precision motion control, and industrial robotics, building HIWIN into an international brand through in-house research and development. By establishing integrated R&D and manufacturing capabilities and advancing smart manufacturing and automation applications, he demonstrated Taiwan’s ability to create greater added value through technology, quality, and integration expertise.

Chuo served as Chairman of the Taiwan Machine Tool & Accessory Builders’ Association (TMBA) for its second and third terms and is also an Honorary Chairman of the association. During his tenure, he championed the shared growth of businesses and the industry, connecting resources across the supply chain and promoting exchanges and collaboration within central Taiwan’s precision machinery cluster. His business perspective extended to the advancement of the industry as a whole.

Talent development and industry–academia collaboration were particular priorities to which he committed substantial resources. Chuo believes that companies should cultivate talent as well as employ it. Through TMBA, he promoted exchanges between businesses and educational institutions, connecting industrial practice with education and research. These efforts helped align talent development with manufacturing needs and made knowledge transfer a long-term endeavor shared across the industry.

This philosophy is also reflected in HIWIN’s academic awards. The company established its mechanical engineering master’s thesis award in 2004 and its outstanding doctoral dissertation award in 2011, encouraging young researchers to pursue mechanical engineering and automation while connecting academic achievements with industrial applications. Chuo himself holds 57 invention patents and was awarded the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon, Third Class, in 2016, reflecting his sustained dedication to innovation and public service.

Global Views Monthly’s recognition of Chuo’s lifetime achievements also highlights the value of industry leaders who bring businesses together and connect industry with academia. From advancing core technologies to laying the foundations for talent development, his journey reminds the industry that business growth and industrial progress reinforce one another. Continued investment in innovation and talent will be essential to strengthening the future competitiveness of Taiwan’s precision manufacturing sector.
