As smart manufacturing and decarbonization become central to manufacturing competitiveness, Taiwan’s machine tool industry is building its capacity for transformation through innovation in products and operations. Under the guidance of the Industrial Development Administration (IDA), Ministry of Economic Affairs, and with support from the Precision Machinery Research & Development Center (PMC), the Taiwan Machine Tool & Accessory Builders’ Association (TMBA) organized the fourth Machine Tool Industry Energy-Saving Label and second Machine Tool Industry AI Empowerment Label evaluations. IDA Director General Chiu Chiu-Hui was invited to present the awards, recognizing companies’ achievements in green and digital transformation and highlighting the joint efforts of government and the association to advance industrial upgrading.

A total of 13 products passed this year’s Energy-Saving Label evaluation, with five receiving Gold Labels and eight receiving Silver Labels. In addition to energy efficiency, energy-saving design, and process improvements, the evaluation considered how companies respond to EU decarbonization trends and international market requirements, encouraging them to address low-carbon competitiveness throughout the product life cycle.

The scope of energy-saving initiatives is expanding beyond equipment electricity consumption to encompass refrigerants, packaging, and carbon emissions data management. Companies are increasingly focusing on refrigerants with low global warming potential (GWP), the reduction and reuse of single-use packaging, organizational greenhouse gas inventories, product carbon footprints, and supply chain emissions data. For Taiwan’s export-oriented machine tool manufacturers, integrating energy-saving design with environmental information management will help meet international customers’ needs.

The AI Empowerment Label results demonstrate the growing reach of artificial intelligence across the industry’s value chain. In the Enterprise category, four companies received Gold Labels and two received Silver Labels. In the Product category, six products earned Gold Labels and four earned Silver Labels. Applications span thermal error compensation, machining quality prediction, equipment condition monitoring, intelligent control, digital twins, and predictive maintenance, as well as intelligent quotation, customer service knowledge bases, and R&D collaboration.

Notably, some companies have begun connecting AI with enterprise resource planning (ERP), the Internet of Things (IoT), sensors, product data management (PDM) systems, and corporate knowledge bases. AI is consequently evolving from a standalone tool into an integrated part of R&D, production, management, and after-sales service. Some cases have already demonstrated shorter processing and waiting times and reduced labor hours, indicating that AI is delivering practical benefits in business operations.

This year’s results show that energy efficiency and AI are jointly advancing machine tool products and business operations. Energy-saving technologies improve the use of energy and resources, while AI strengthens data utilization and decision-making. Together, they support more efficient, low-carbon manufacturing and services.

With support from the Industrial Development Administration (IDA) and TMBA’s efforts to connect industry partners, the Energy-Saving and AI Empowerment Label evaluations continue to identify exemplary transformation initiatives and help companies showcase their R&D achievements. Moving forward, translating energy-saving and AI benefits into product advantages and service value that customers can understand and verify will be a key priority for Taiwan’s machine tool industry as it seeks to strengthen differentiation and international competitiveness.
